In the old days, the D Shackle had the same role as the Kenter Shackle and was commonly used in ship chain, and it still is in Japan. In the present, D Shackles are used for Mooring, specially Joining Shackles type D LTM (Long Term Mooring)

The Joining Shackle type D comes in the same sizes as ship chain, since it was primarily used in the ship industry. Nowadays, the larger sizes are the most common, since these D Shackles are used in Offshore Mooring Chain and projects, and even in Offshore Wind Chain. The most commonly used sizes are 82 and 84 mm, as well as 120 mm.
